Monday Mantra to Goddess Tara

Updated: Jun 16, 2023

This morning's Monday Mantra is to the goddess Tara. She's well known in both Hinduism and Buddhism. In Buddhism she is known as a Bodhisattva - that is, one who puts off their own enlightenment in order to help others reach enlightenment, and by doing so, actually reaches enlightenment more quickly than they otherwise would have done. (Don’t worry about trying to understand that - this is Buddhist philosophy at its finest which, whilst wonderful, often seems counterintuitive until you get deep into the study of it!).

In Tibetan Buddhism, Tara is the most worshipped deity of all. Tara was adopted by Buddhism, but her origins are in Hinduism, where she is known as one of the ten Great Wisdom Goddesses, as well as a Tantric incarnation of Parvati (Shiva’s consort, and mother of Ganesha). She protects those on the path to enlightenment (moksha in Hinduism), as well as those of us on a more earthly journey.

Her mantra is a call for peace, both within ourselves and in the world at large. It also enhances sacred feminine energy, and asks for protection and the fulfilment of needs. And it can be a bit of a tongue-twister, and has lots of rolled Rs!

Om Tare Tuttare Ture Swaha

Ohm tarr-ay too-tarr-ay tour-ay sva-ha

Om and Salutation, may the Mother of All guard and protect me and fulfil my needs
