Durga, the subject of the the Devi Mahatmyam

This week's Monday Mantra is 21 of the 27 verses of the Devi Mahatmyam - a dramatic telling of Durga's defeat of many demons, including arrogance, pride, hypocrisy, greed, rage, discrimination, injustice and more. Awakening Durga's energy can transform life and uplevel your health and vitality.


Ya Devi Sarva bhuteshu

Vishnu mayeti shabdita

Namastasyei Namastasyei

Namastasyei Namo Namaha


Salutations to the Great Feminine,

power of Vishnu himself, who abides in all beings,

Salutations again and again,

Here are a few of you ineffable qualities.


Ya Devi Sarva bhuuteshu

Cheteneya rupena bhiditate

Namastasyei, Namastasyei

Namastasyei Namo Namaha


I bow to the Great Feminine who abides in all beings in the form of Infinite Consciousness


The next 18 verses all follow the same pattern, with just the first word of the second line changing.The verse is:


Ya Devi Sarva bhuteshu

[word] Rupena Samsthita

Namastasyei Namastasyei

Namastasyei Namo Namaha


I bow to the Great Feminine who abides in all beings in the form of [quality]


and the words are:


Buddhi (intelligence) Nidra (sleep) Kshudhi (Hunger)

Chaya (Reflection) Shakti (Power) Thrishna (Thirst)

Kshanti (Forgiveness) Jati (Genius) Laja (Modesty)

Shanti (Peace) Shraddha (Faith) Kanti (Beauty)

Vritti (Activity) Smritti (Memory) Daya (Compassion)

Tusti (Contentment) Maatru (Mother) Bhranti (Delusion)


The last verse that I sang was


Indriyanam Adhistatri

Bhutanamcha Akilei Shucha

Bhuteshu Satatam Tasyei Vyapti

Devyei Namo Namaha
